Speech & Play

Toddlers begin to use real words, as well as babbling in their second year. By 24 months, they often have about 100 words which increases to 1000 words by 3 years!

Often toddlers use content words so that their speech sounds ‘telegraphic’ (eg Mum shop).  However, by 3 years of age, they are creating longer sentences of three or more words together.

Toddlers begin to copy more and more of what they see.  ‘Feeding the baby’ and other home corner games are popular.  It is helpful to provide toys that complement this development such as prams, beds, tea sets and play food.
